CalPERS Board approves 2016 health plan premium rates

2017 PEMHCA premiums can be found here.

On June 17th, the CalPERS Board approved the 2016 health plan premium rates.

Basic Plans

Premium increases varied significantly by region and plan.  By region, Northern California generally saw the highest increases; Los Angeles region the lowest increases.  By plan, the largest increases generally were for Blue Shield Net Value (almost 19% for all California regions); Kaiser and PERS Select had some of the smallest increases.  CalPERS stated that almost half (45%) of the premium rate increases were due to increased pharmacy costs.

Medicare Plans

Kaiser Medicare premiums increased 0.6% with the other Medicare plan premiums increasing between 7.9% and 20%.  The Board eliminated HMO Medicare plans Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Health Net, and Sharp.   For 2016, Medicare plans will be Kaiser and UnitedHealthcare, in addition to the PERS Choice/Select/Care plans.  A special option under the UnitedHealthcare Medicare plan allows retirees to self- pay for dental and vision coverage.
